Does anyone have any experience with the new collaboration between Viking Tactical and S&W called the M&P VTAC? It comes in 9 and 40 and sports what can only be controversial sights.

A lot of the buzz at the first day of SHOT show was about small frame sub-caliber firearms. Earlier this year, we released a training DVD in the Personal Firearms Defense Video series on this very topic.

Now, offerings from Kahr, S&W and others have joined the Kel-tec and Ruger offerings.

Personally, while I appreciate the firearms and have carried .380s and .32s in the past, I have preferred to go no smaller than a snub .38 revolver most of the time. Has anyone here on the forums chosen to carry a slim ultra compact as a primary defensive tool?

My previous post delt with small caliber weapons, the reason being is that i am concidering getting my ccw. A few facts about me are, i am 60 years old with ostioperosis (thin bones) plus authuritis has been has been making itself felt. I also have small hands. Back in the day i shot all sorts of handguns upto and including 44 mags and 45 acp. But since i have been "out of the game" so to speak for several years i would like suggestions on what would be something to look at. Preferably smallish in overall size for a pocket carry of maybe on my belt. A stout recoiling firearm would not be a good idea for me. thank you in advance .

fully in a mere 2" of jello, it's not going to expand at all in flesh and blood. This quote is from Sanow and Marshall's book on Stopping power. Tom designed the Hydro Shok, so he ought to know whereof he speaks about bullet expansion. I've shot many hundreds of critters over the years, with ccw ammo and anyone can prove to themselves that 147 gr 9mm jhps, and 230 gr .45 jhp's, do not expand in flesh and blood. The velocity is just too low to get enough fluid filled tissue flowing into and out-over the lips of the nose cavity to force the bullet to expand (in flesh, now, not in jello). The hide/clothing "clog" the hp cavity enough that it can't "flush" itself clear as it penetrates, as can the higher velocity bullets.

Hey all,
After reading through the discussion on the mouse guns I had a question on ammo for the 380.
I picked up a P3AT from a friend who needed the cash and not having owned one I am unsure on how to judge which ammo would be best for carry.
I know I need to train with it more than my main carry(G19)to become proficient with it.
SO how do you judge ammo to be the best for carry other than reliability in the specific weapon?
Thanks

I know keeping magazines loaded for a prolonged period hurts the springs...but should you take the cartridges out of the magazine at the end of each day of carry? Seems excessive. Is weekly unloading of the magaiznes sufficient? Any thoughs?

Rob Pincus on "Open Carry: Good Idea or Not?"

We had a question on Armed American Radio today in regard to legal Open Carry.

I had made a statement earlier in the show that I do not think Open Carry is a good idea for those interested in self defense. I also alluded to the idea that some people see carrying openly as a political statement. I don't think you should carry a gun as a political statement, I think you should do it to be better able to protect yourself and I think you are better able to do that when you carry concealed.

Certainly, there are times and places for open carry and one of them was a situation that the caller spoke about: being in a remote area such as the Texas Border would be a time when openly carrying a gun would be much more appropriate. This is a very different situation than grocery shopping or being in another public space where people are often close to you and your mind is likely on many things other than weapon retention.

All that said, I certainly think that the choice to carry openly or not should be in the hands of the individual and not be legally restricted.

What are you thoughts?

I have a S&W 642. My typical carry setup is strong side belt using a suit coat as concealment and on more casual days, I pocket carry on my strong side (right side). I have just watched Mr. Cunningham's joint venture DVD with Mr. Pincus "Defensive Revolver Fundamentals" and I really think Mr. Cunningham's reload method is very intuitive and great for using those gross motor skills that we'll have to fall back on during a DCI because it uses the strong hand, which should be the most dexterous hand, for reloading with a speed loader or speed strip.

However, I end up carrying my speed loaders on my off side and doing what Mr. deBethencourt calls an 'auto-pistol' reload, which is keeping a firing grip on the gun with the strong hand while reloading with the off hand. I find this to work quite well and even trying it under stress, I can accomplish a reload fairly easily. My main concern using this method is the pressure used in pressing the Comp-1 loader onto the cylinder to release the rounds. Without supporting the cylinder somehow, I wonder if I will eventually damage the yoke and crane of the gun. Does anyone have any experience with this? Are my concerns unfounded?

By the way, if you have a revolver or are thinking of one for defensive carry, I'd recommend getting a copy of this DVD. While they don't address too much regarding a snub nose revolver, much of the material is adaptable and there is always something new to learn or a familiar concept presented in a different way that helps make that slight difference in efficiency. Well worth taking a look at.

So, we all know that we shouldn't ever point "a gun" at someone... and some would go further and suggest we never point "a gun" at anything we aren't willing to destroy. But, what EXACTLY do we mean when we say that?

Obviously, we must point training guns (simunitions, airsoft, etc) at people during scenarios or they are meaningless. If you've ever been in a gunshop you know that real guns (presumably unloaded or non-operational) are pointed at people constantly and it is tolerated by industry professionals.

So, what do we really mean when we say don't point "a gun" at anyone... where do YOU draw the line?

I'm anxious to hear your definitions and explanations... I'll chime in soon!

Glocks work great for 25 years.

The first Glock Gen 4 that I have in a class dies a quick death due to a broken recoil spring.
The new spring seems overly strong. USSA Staff Member (student in my class this week), tells me that Glock has a new design (already) for the spring that replaces the first version of the Gen 4 spring.

Rob Pincus says: Don't buy a Gen 4.

Just returned from the local gun shop after inspecting my new arrival from S&W. It’s a 686 2.5” variant. I was told it was the only ‘new’ one available across the network and I was a bit surprised it arrived so quickly. I ordered it on Friday and it came in on Wednesday! In any event I was pleased.

The darn thing is a handful, or at least its stubby L-frame design makes it look that way. Granted, I don’t have a large posture and my hands are medium at best. The stock Batman grips fit me better than I expected.

Still, I’ll be sending it off to be tweaked, mooned and honed while I'll ask H. Bowen to add his sights and tune it. I haven’t decided if I’ll leave the hammer alone or bobb it. If I'm feeling large afterwards, I may well have it finished in either hard chrome or NP3. Frankly, I never have really liked the stock stainless look from smith but that's just me. In any event, I was looking for a good range gun and a custom candidate and this should do fine.

Any thoughts are welcomed as this forum is still new, so I thought to throw this out.

Regards,
Dan Ortego
