As Froglives said. A good pitbull, dobie, rot, or shepard will do just perfect! A well trained dog is the best "semi-non-lethal" you can get.

[That's why when I leave my family at home, I also leave my favorite home defense tool, a well trained dog.]

Froglives I couldn't agree with you more. We have a yellow lab that my daughter who is half his size drags to her tea parties by his collar. I have total faith that dog would willingly eat a bullet, ball bat or intruder for my girl or the Mrs. People commonly pose the question "If I choose to keep my bedside gun in a lockbox/safe (a must if you have kids) would I have time to wake up and clear my head enough to bring the gun into the fight if someone kicked in my door and rushed into the house?" With a good mutt snoozing in your favorite chair the answer is absolutly. I see no reason why a trained guard/attack dog could not buy a family time to get out or get armed if there is an invasion and not to mention they are pretty good fire alarms.

I proudly admit that the "tactical light" that I have mounted on my AR, 12gauge, and in pocket is a $2 check out line special from Ace Hardware. It is black and OD of 30mm. I had a pair of low profile 30mm scope mounts laying around so I used them to mount to my AR. Ghetto but it works nice. The light is LED and surprisingly bright. Good soft push button located at the rear has never given me any problems.

I would post a pic but the size is too large for the forum to take.

I carry a K-BAR TDI (small model) at the 11 o'clock position. The sheath is part of a magazine pouch by Dale Fricke Holsters. I think in the fight of your life, opening a folder may not be possible (I also carry a Spyderco Endura 4). Fortunatly in Montana my Concealed Carry Permit Covers Knives, other states are probably different. Which ever Knife you select I would recommend getting a Blunted Trainer, I have one for the TDI and an Endura 4 trainer, look into some Good training and integrate the knife into your personal training program.

I found a Coleman flashlight at Wallyworld that seems to do well. Made from aluminum with "teeth" by the bulb. Tried it at night and it lit up the house across the street!! Around 1 inch thick and rear on/off button, seems like a good edc taclight.

If I am going somewhere that prohibits or does not understand "fixed blades" I carry two folders, (never know which hand will be free) I carry a Kershaw Speedsafe on strong side, and a SOG Flash 2 on my weak side (Sog is very easy to open with weak hand. I use both those knives to cut heavy electrical wire etc when working and both never fail to easily regain an edge.

If I was to need a knife for self defense, my preference would be my Spec Plus Fighter SP6-95, they are made in Ontario USA, have just the right amount of finger protection, a fixed blade strong enough to deflect a metal baseball bat, and well, just feel perfect in my hand.
Cheers

I have my preferences, so both my kids and the wife can easily buy some time with what ever bat, golf club, edged weapon is laying around. We practice full contact with minimal protection to get past the lack of familiarity with hard or unexpected contact, but I know that's really all about luck.
That's why when I leave my family at home, I also leave my favorite home defense tool, a well trained dog. Mine are usually Ridgeback / Shepperd mixes but its not the breed that matters its the training.

Suffice to say, if an intruder is outside she will sound a warning that the family and the bad guy will hear. If that intruder makes it inside, they will never hear her coming. She will always be between the attacker and my family, (though I am pretty sure she would protect my daughter before any one else, meh so would I) and you will have no choice but try to go through her.

The really nice thing is a good dog has natural target instincts, you don't have to train them to go for the weapon hand, they are going to remove part of that persons wrist, the throat, soft tissue, tendons you need to walk with? their all part of their natural instinct and diet :-)

Sure you can drop my dog, but then again you better, because if you don't she's going to drop you, and if she is protecting her "pack" she won't mind a bit dying to do it.

body armor has been available for some time now. I actually did not realize that it ever was not available to the general public. Now there may be some newer ceramic types of ballistic plates that are not available but your normal run of the mill Kevlar vests are readily available.

I was watching the new Palm video of their body armor lineup. In it they are indicating that soft body armor is available to the general public. I was under the impression that body armor is only available to law enforcement and licensed security personell. When did it become available to the general public?

I suggest you work a lot more on your hand to hand skills, rather than waste time on such a limited use sort of weapon. Work out with a walking stick/cane. If it's long enough to be used in both hands, it makes any knife, short of a real sword, look sick by comparison.

Ideally, the stick will be 4 ft long, be divisible with a 1/3rd twist (into 2 pcs, each of which is 26" long) and it will have a cane crook (shields your fingers, like a sword pommel). It should feature a 3-cornered cross- section and tapers from 1" or so width at the top, to 3/8" or so at the bottom, with a rounded tip that threads into the hollow metal "stick", so it can be adjusted for height, if you really do need to use it as a cane. :-) Ideally, it will also have a removable "head" that is heavy enough to do damage if it is thrown hard, and a retracable cord for letting you "sling" it when you need both hands free, like in the grocery store, pushing a cart and controling the kids.

My "primary" holster varies depending one what I'm wearing & what I'm carrying. The two holsters I use most are a Kirkpatrick 'Texas Crossdraw' and a CAA fanny pack holster. My two primary carry guns are a Ruger P89 with CTC Lasergrips & XS 24/7 Big Dot Sights and a Kimber Custom TLE/RL II with Pro-Series burlwood finished lasergrips & a Streamlight TLR-1 weaponlight. When I'm going out at night, and my fanny pack just won't fit with what I'm wearing, I use a Blade-Tech custom strongside OWB holster that carries my Kimber with the weaponlight mounted.

Either way I also have a Kel-Tec P-3AT with a CTC Laserguard tucked into my hip pocket in a DeSantis Nemesis pocket holster.

The fanny pack is nice because it will easily carry either handgun, and the Kimber fits just fine with the Streamlight mounted to it. It also carries my spare mags, flashlight, Pepper Blaster, Gerber Multiplier, Kershaw Blur, wallet, keys, etc.... And yes, I've heard all of the "if you wear a fanny pack everyone will know you have a gun" arguments. I don't buy it. The average person sees a fanny pack holster as just another fanny pack. Some other CCW holders might notice, maybe, but no one else will. It's the same deal as with a 5.11 or Sig Tac vest. We know what they are, few others do. As long as you don't wear them with hats and/or T-shirts sporting NRA or gun company logos like you're on your way to an IDPA match, nobody's going to notice. That's especially true when you're actually using all those pockets for things like you wallet & keys or if you're in a wheelchair like I am!

I don't see any comments on the High Noon Holsters so let me weigh in. I've taught CCW classes in Louisiana since '96 and have used several brands of holsters and different calibers and makes of pistols. For the past 3 years I've carried an H&K P30 [9mm Lugar] with the High Noon "personal secret" leather IWB - have had zero problems or complaints. Six months ago I had an opportunity to buy a Kimber 'UL TRA+CDP II [45APC] and went back to the High Noon "personal secret" and like the choice. I give 'High Marks' to High Noon.

If I feel the need to go 'deep concealment' I'll use the "SmartCarry" - a belly band type holster w/spare mag slot. The ONLY thing I don't like about it is the difficulty in reholstering. Otherwise it can be worn with almost everything but a swimsuit.

PS: I carry anytime, everytime I am dressed, even at home - and at my Church services. [Yes, in Louisiana one can carry concealed on Church property and during the service if you follow the guide lines.]

i have been carrying my glcok 27 in a appendix carry position for a long time and finally found a holster i really like for appendix carry, it is the clipper from alabama holster company, easy on and off and very secure it snaps into place and the gun will not fall out when i bend over or run, jump or anything like that. it is the best appendix carry holster i have found. i used to use a supertuck deluxe in about the 4 o clock position when i was going to carry for a long time but i gave it a buddy of mine since i got the clipper holsters from AHC! i carry a spare clock 23 mag in my front left pocket in a pocket mag pouch made by the same company as the holster! it is just an awsome combo that i will be using for a long time! any new carry guns i get will get the same holster mag pouch combo!!

I have recently made a switch that I am pleased with.
From a milt sparks VM II IWB with a leather belt to a Dale Fricke Archangel AIWB and a 5 stitch instructor belt.

I carry a glock 21 with a short grip and AIWB conceals the gun very well. The kydex is just as comfortable as the leather and I tried several crossbreedish holsters when I made the switch. I found that the stability of the archangel was fabulous compared to everything else out there. The gun is always in the right place and doesn't shift when I am active as it did with some of the other holster and loop combinations.

The kydex and nylon is also quiter than the leather. For a while it was sounding like i was on horse back with all the leather squeaking as I walked around.

Pepper Spray, Back up for your back up.

As a pepper spray instructor for over 15 years and having the unfortunate displeasure of exposure to several pepper sprays on the market today, pepper spray is a viable alternative to going to an all out street fight. It should be noted that pepper spray is not a magic bullet, but here is what it is. Pepper spray is a deterent, a game changer and an extra step and a half before the use of deadly force. Given the circumstances at hand, violent confrontations are not always static and can evolve into a deadly force encounter in seconds and the necessity for going to guns is always at the fore front of a violent encounter. When confronted with an assailant you have to consider the totality of the circumstances. If your attacker is coming at you with empty hands telling you he wants to do you harm invading your personal space and placing you in imminent peril of being struck with open or closed hands, he told you he was going to harm you, so spray him. The key here is that he told you he was going to kick your butt or wanted to do you harm and approaching you with empty hands. Can I shoot him? not likely. All situations are not static and he may spontaneously produce a knife or a gun and test your reactionary gap (inside 20 ft).

What if he does not produce a weapon and he wants to walk up on my personal space inside my reactionary gap and get ready to punch me? Spray em, you have the right to defend yourself. Going to guns may or may not be appropriate given the gender, number of assailants, ability and age. Pepper Spray can buy you time, interrupt the confrontation, disorient and even prevent the completion of the attack. Pepper Spray can also allow you valuable time to decide to go to guns or not after deployment. If you carry pepper spray and a firearm for concealed carry you are allowing yourself to have another tool in your defense toolbox. Carrying pepper spray in pistol free zones also allows you to be some what proactive and prepared and less vulnerable to protect yourself and your family. If all that you have is a hammer, then the whole world is a nail.

The grip described above by madscimma is a good starting point as are his intended targets. I will add that any hammer fist would be made more effective by the force multiplication of the impact weapon you are deploying. So any place where a hammer fist would be effective you could expect that a hammer fist thrown with your folder in your grip would typically be more effective.

Make sure you keep your thumb over the top to keep the knife in your hand, and have at it.

I'm not abandoning lethal means but I have to be realistic. California has a Castle Doctrine law (really!) but the legal system administrators are still sometimes hostile to armed self defense. So, if I shoot an intruder it is a dead certainty that I'll spend some time in handcuffs. Since I plan to say no more to the police than, "I didn't do anything wrong and I want to call an attorney," the responding officers will not be getting back to their favorite Starbucks soon. How that will affect their mood is unknown.

I look at security in overlapping layers. None of the layers have to be perfect but they must reinforce each other. Externally I try to have a system good enough to convince a would be invader to pick another target. I also know that I will never know how good it is unless it fails so I overdesign. It may sound callus but if I cannot make crime dis sappear I can do my best to make it go somehere else.

If the external layers fail I fall back on firearms, OC spray, 911, sharps object, blunt objects, kicking, scratching, biting, harsh language and a couple of good lawyers. Not necessarily in that order. A TASER, if I get one, will be another of the less than lethal options for repelling boarders.

I had tunnel rat tell me that all his training only covered what is already known but he survived because he had a backup plan for the backup plan for that training.

Just bear in mind that a Taser is only effective while the darts are in contact and the juice is flowing. If the connection is broken the attacker can get right back up. They're great for in public spaces where you can zap and escape, but in your home you should consider a more lethal method.

Granted, I don't know the specifics of your situation, but I hope that's helpful.

I already have OC spray cans located around the house and I've been looking hard at getting a TASER as another option for home defense. According what I've read they use compressed nitrogen to propel the darts. So what is the shelf life on the cartridges? Is there any good way for a user to practice with one?
