Hi Brad. That’s a pretty open question but regardless of age a great place to start is with some fitness and/or fighting training (see a doctor’s advice where needed), a basic first aide course, and a handgun course that is geared for personal defense. If doing all three isn’t possible then starting with all or any one of these is a good place and then as proficiency comes, move to one of the others.

In a boxing match or fistfight, one may have the opportunity to retrain and come back to fight another day. In a gunfight, second place is NOT an option.
