Hi Mike. Thanks for watching! I’ve seen “tests” where rounds were shot at many (10-11) layers of traditional drywall separated by about 2 inches and regardless if it’s shotgun, rifle, or pistol the rounds passed through all the layers. This test was done with the full gamut of ammo types in 9mm, .223, and 12g calibers. The rifle rounds were more susceptible to yaw and keyhole but still passed through with ease. The big takeaway is knowing what is beyond the direction you are most likely going to be shooting in a home defense situation and where needed implement barriers that will slowdown or stop an errant shot. This could be as simple as a well placed bookshelf or going to the extra steps of reinforcing behind the wall or door. Finally, choosing a round specifically designed for self defense will help ensure that it doesn’t exit the threat and if it does exit it will have a greatly reduced energy.

Hi Michael.
We don’t have all the details of what happened but is a vivid reminder of why we must identify the threat prior to pulling the trigger. Having a barricade position behind a locked door would allow for time to communicate with whomever is trying to get in the door. Something along the lines of “Do not come in this room etc.” this would potentially provide time to determine if it is a police officer at the door (as well as give the officer warning to back away from the door until his identity could be confirmed). Having 911 dispatcher on the phone would also help, they would be able to relay to the homeowner police are on scene as well as providing the officer the information that the homeowner is armed (and what they look like). Even if the homeowner was moving through his house to get to his kids, he (as well as the officer) have a responsibility to identify who they are shooting prior to pulling the trigger. In this case, it appears the officer was uniformed so the homeowner shot out of panic without proper identification of who he was shooting. This is a horrible outcome for all involved and from what we do know it probably was very preventable had the homeowner followed one or all the steps outlined above. Hi Stephen. The caliber is very capable for personal defense but the amount of recoil that comes from shooting that round makes it less desirable for personal defense when compared to the 9mm. There is also the problem with lower capacity when compared to similar sized guns chambered in 9mm. As for the guns you listed, they all come from manufacturers and lines that are generally proven reliable.
