10mm Auto for Personal Defense?
Rob PincusRob Pincus is on the range with a Smith & Wesson M&P 2.0 in 10mm. 10mm Auto is an inherently accurate round and a very powerful round, but Rob believes it’s a bit more than we need for self defense. If you’re saying, there’s no such thing as more than I need for self defense, keep watching. Rob discusses the evolution of bullet design, the carryability of a 10mm handgun, recoil management and time back on target with a 10mm vs a 9mm or .40 S&W, and more.
Rob recently made a video of a 10mm Auto gel test. Were the results as he predicted? Check it out at the link.
10 millimeter auto, it is a handful now shooting out of this MMP 2.0 specifically Designed for the 10 millimeter. Obviously, it's a large gun. It's a very comfortable gun, very aggressive texturing. It's controllable, and 10 millimeters is an inherently accurate round. It's also obviously a very powerful round.
I would say it's actually a bit much for personal defense. Is it gonna get the job done? Absolutely. I hear a lot of justifications for choosing 10. Millimeter, and believe me, back in the 1990s I was on board.
I have a collection of 10 millimeters in my safe, but none of them have been purchased in The last probably 10 or 15 years. To me, it really is an older choice because of bullet design. Bullet design has come a long way. Efficiency in understanding my personal understanding, I think our community's Understanding how bullets behave in the body and what we really need to do in terms of stopping a threat physically. We know what bullets do.
We know that modern bullets can do it well. Well. 10 millimeters is gonna do it better. There is no doubt when it comes to putting energy into a target and being able to carry it Around in a full-size gun, 15 + 1 rounds of a 200-grain round like this. Hollow point XD from Freedom Munitions, which we have done a gel test on.
By the way, here at PDN. Uh, this would be a great choice. It's an awesome choice also for hunting, and I think that's really where the 10 millimeter Shines as a handgun round in contemporary times. I think about what I would want to use if I We're going to use a handgun to put down a deer, certainly wild boar. Something like that.
10 millimeters where it’s at now, Probably not in a tactical, defensive carry duty-type gun. Um, one point I actually qualified at a sheriff's office with a 10-millimeter handgun. A Glock 20. Uh, today, if I were going to need to carry a Gun, I'd probably choose something a little more ergonomic, like this MMP 2.0. But again, 10 millimeters is just a very powerful round.
Doesn't mean it can't be controlled, doesn't mean it can't be shot quickly. It's probably a bit more than you need, and as we saw in our gel demo, that round is probably gonna go through a person. We don't want to put energy on the other side of the target if the threat's coming at us. We want to deposit all of that energy right into them. We want to be able to put it in the vial.
Areas, and that's something that this handgun and these bullets are certainly going to be Able to do, but it's going to take some extra energy out of the back, and that's why I think It is not worth the potential extra size of the gun because you’re not going to be able to Get as small a gun as you would in a 9 millimeter, or even a .40 Smith & Wesson. I also don't think it's worth the extra recoil management, and that means extra time before You get back on target. Can you learn to control it? Sure. Could you get a ported gun?
Sure, heavier gun, longer barrel? Sure, all those things. But all of those things are compromises. When we think about pros and cons of a Defensive round and an option for carry for home defense or personal defense, I think the 10-millimeter in its modern form still has more cons than pros. Is it a bad choice?
Not a bad choice. I think there are better choices, but I will tell you. My short time spending with this, uh, MMP 2.0 tells me that if I were gonna add another 10 Millimeter to the collection, this might be the one.
