Cable Lock Demo: Handguns

Rob Pincus
Duration:   2  mins

A cable lock is an efficient and secure way to prevent unauthorized access to your defensive firearm. Rob Pincus demonstrates how to secure a cable lock to three popular types of handguns – a revolver, a Ruger semi-automatic pistol in .22 caliber, and a semi-automatic pistol.

With each one, Rob does not thread the cable lock through the barrel, which could potentially damage it. He also stresses that you must confirm the handgun is clear before attaching the cable lock.

Gun safety is a multi-faceted topic, and attaching a cable lock to your handguns is part of it. Explore other aspects of gun safety at the link.

To secure a revolver with your cable lock, you're gonna want to make sure that you open the cable lock. Keep the firearm pointed in a generally safe direction while we confirm that it is empty with the cylinder open. We're going to simply insert the cable through any of the holes in the cylinder. We'll secure it. Remove the key and now at this point the cylinder won't be able to be closed.

That means that you will not be able to actually load the revolver, certainly not be able to fire it, even if you can still manipulate the hammer or the trigger. In some models you will not be able to fire the gun. This also avoids any concern about potentially damaging the crown of the muzzle or any part of the barrel by inserting the cable through the barrel. Let's look at securing a classic Ruger semi-automatic pistol 22 caliber with a cable lock. Now this is kind of a classic design.

There are a lot of different models. You're gonna remove the magazine, keeping the gun pointed in a generally safe direction, make sure that it is clear. After locking the slide open, you'll see that it creates a large opening. We're gonna open our cable lock, put the cable through that opening. In the bolt that goes into the slide, remove the key, and now we have secured the firearm so that it can't go into battery even if we were to put a loaded magazine in there and get around partially loaded this firearm is now secure and cannot be fired very simple way without having to worry about threading the cable through securing a classic rigger design.

To secure a semi-automatic pistol with a cable lock we're going to remove the magazine from the firearm, keep it pointed in a generally safe direction, lock it open, make sure that it is actually empty. If you don't know how to lock the gun open, you can make sure that the magazine is empty, insert it into the gun and then pull back on the slide, at which point it should lock open again, remove the magazine. And then after you open the cable lock, the best way to do this is to go through the magazine well up through the ejection port and then secure the cable lock this will. Keep the frame and the slide together. Also, if someone knows how to manipulate the gun, it's better than going through the barrel.

That's how you secure semi-automatic pistol at this point, the slide can't go in the battery. Um, obviously you can't get a magazine in and even if you were to force around it in the chamber because the slide can't get fully closed, you will not be able to fire this pistol. It is secure.
