Long Distance Shooting Trigger Control
Rob PincusSee what it takes to be precise when shooting a defensive handgun. A Personal Defense Network (PDN) original video.
Here come another important tip from the Personal Defense Network. Up! Excellent, go ahead and holster. Rob Pincus here for the Personal Defense Network. We're gonna look at the difference between the type of shooting that you just saw, up close, fist size or hand size groups, our typical defensive shooting, and what it takes to be more precise.
In fact, maybe even unreasonably precise with a defensive handgun. With me is Brandon Finch from US PALM. Now you may recognize Brandon from his outstanding performance in season two of S.W.A.T. Magazine TV, where he actually outshot myself and a whole bunch of other world-class instructors when it came to Dave Harrington's iron cross drill. So, I know he knows how to shoot and we're gonna see what happens if we move back to this distance.
Obviously, a very extreme defensive shooting distance. And we asked Brandon to put a shot or two into the head of that target down there. A much more precise shot than what we would normally train for. Brandon, what are some of the things you're gonna do differently now, or what things are you gonna pay attention to mechanically, now that we've moved this far back? Well, some of the things I'm gonna pay attention to a lot more when going from distance, is concentrating even more on trigger press, trigger control, and reset of it.
Because I know that the differences from up close, you know, the errors just get increased as you go back in distance. So I really am gonna focus on trigger. And what about mechanically on your body? Is your body posture gonna change at all? Or maybe your hand pressure position?
Well, mostly it's just gonna be taking a little bit more of my time and, you know, getting in and leaning over, and getting on top of the gun. Great, I'll get out of your way and watch you take a shot or two. Outstanding. And that's the difference. That's the balance of speed and precision.
Distance actually is going to increase the effect of deviation, that's why you need more deviation control. Primary way to do that? Expertise in the trigger control, thinking about that trigger press, making sure you're feeling that reset, taking the follow up shots when you're ready, not as soon as you possibly can pull the trigger. Brandon, outstanding. Thank you.
Thank you very much, Rob. Be sure to check out the Personal Defense Network for more important tips just like that one.
