PDN 2012 National Training Tour Update: Week 5
Rob PincusDescription
PDN tour update. It's been a busy week for me. I've been running a combat focus shooting instructor development course. We had 14 instructor candidates in from all around the country. Omari Broussard was out.
He's actually going through master level instructor development so that he can teach the instructor development course for that program. So we had about 12 to 14-hour days the last five days of the week. And then this weekend we're out here at Briar Rabbit in Zanesville. The instructor course is actually conducted at Black Wing Shooting Center. And we're going to hear from Rex Gore the owner of Black Wing about how he integrates training into his five-star program there.
We were just out here running a two-day combat focus shooting course with a bunch of new shooters and a bunch of assistant instructors who were working on their game, their instructing game, getting ready to get certified active status. And we just finished a FitShot workout. FitShot. Zanesville, Ohio. We just finished, for this guy, five days of instructor development, two days of instructor team teaching.
Combat focus-- Now, this girl up here, she just finished a one-day refresher. It's been about two years since she started training in the combat focus shooting approach. They both do CrossFit, they both do functional fitness exercises at intense levels. That's what we're going to do now is combine our practical shooting with our functional fitness. Go!
Get it, get it. Woo! Good? Good. And a big shout out?
Oh, it's awesome, I mean when I first started as a CFS instructor, I was too fat to pull this off. That's true. Thanks to Rob. Yeah, you know, he taught me the importance of being physically fit to be a better instructor to my students. So, thank you.
Good work bro. Woo! FitShot. Good work on your reloads! I've been carrying quite a few years.
Never really had formal training. Just practice a lot on your own. You pick up a lot of bad habits. And this year I decided, well, you know, I want to get some formal training. So I looked around on the internet, found Personal Defense Network.
I've, seeing you and knowing you for a few years, you know just following stuff, looked to some other places. And I'm seeing this course and I'm going, well, "I'm gonna do this." You know, I need to do this because, well, I carry responsibility. I want to be able to protect myself and my family if I have to. So coming to the course and doing this, the drills you put us through, I feel so much more confident now. I mean, the, you know, repetitiveness of the, you know up-drills and then the number of drills, and the ladder drills, and, you know, slowing down getting in the proper, I can feel now, I can walk out and present my pistol out of the holster without even thinking about it.
Well, don't do that. Well, I know, yeah. But you know, the whole thing is, it's been, it's been a great training and you know something I really wanted to do and I'm, I'm so glad I've done it and I'd recommend it to anybody so. Welcome to Delaware, Ohio to the Black Wing Shooting Center, where you have a five-star NSSF-rated shooting facility here which has outdoor ranges, which includes skeet trap and five-stand, including sporting clays and indoor ranges, rifle and pistol. We're here today talking to Rob Pincus, who's doing his tour here through our facility, which he uses frequently to work on his combat focus training.
We also have a couple of instructors that are certified by the CFS program. Our facility here has a retail component. We've got about a 20,000 square-foot facility. We have a lot of training from beginning to advanced. We do a lot of corporate outings, a lot of small groups, large groups, fundraisers, all kinds of activities.
But training is a major component of our facility, represents about 10% of our annual sales. And we do a lot of different things from handgun, rifle, shotgun training, both formal classes. We're bringing in a lot of outside professional instructors like Rob, other instructors, such as Nora Ross, Paul Giambrone on the shotgun sports. Ken Hackathorn, just to name a few. So we're very committed.
We have a lot of youth programs as well, summer camps for the kids, different shooting programs, competitions, leagues throughout the year. So we're excited about continuing to develop our business. We've started this company, my wife and I, about eight years ago and have grown to the size we are today. Hi, this is Andy Loefler, lead instructor here at Black Wing Shooting Center in Delaware, Ohio, and contributing trainer to the Personal Defense Network. Here at Black Wing Shooting Center, we've created a very successful model by recognizing that our training component side of the house is actually a very vital part of our customer contact and the way we provide service to our customers.
And this is true whether that customer is a returning shooter, an experienced shooter, or looking to enhance their skills, or more importantly, a new shooter looking to just get into the aspects of gun ownership, personal defense, personal safety. And allowing our training division to partner with an organization like the Personal Defense Network has given us access to the innovative and cutting edge training available through the Personal Defense Network website. Here at Black Wing Shooting Center, we like to say that our motto is "We want you to experience the exceptional". We provide a world-class retail facility, excellent range facilities, and through our partnership with the Personal Defense Network, cutting edge training, the best that is available for our trainers, for our customers and for other folks around the world who are using that website At Black Wing Shooting Center, we're very proud of what we've accomplished. And we're very proud of our continuing association with the Personal Defense Network.
I'm here taking a two-day combat focus shooting course with Rob Pincus. I was carrying a paddle holster and he offered me to try out this CrossBreed holster for inside the waistband which I'm a small person, so this band had fit me in a great way and concealment. And I really like it, works just as easy as the paddle holster, which was actually more bulkier and harder to conceal and it fits great. It's comfortable. And I recommend it for anybody, especially someone small-sized that has a hard time concealing a weapon.
