Cable Lock Demo: Shotguns
Rob PincusA PDN member requested that we make a video about how to attach a cable lock to any firearm. It’s not that simple, because a cable lock is not a “one size/method fits all” solution. Instead of that, Rob Pincus made ten videos about attaching a cable lock to various types of firearms. In this video, the three shotgun videos are combined. See how Rob attaches a cable lock to a pump shotgun, a double-barreled shotgun, and a semiauto shotgun.
Gun safety is one of the issues we focus on here at PDN. Rob has also made a video about securing handguns with a cable lock. Watch it at the link.
To secure a pump shotgun with your cable lock, first we're gonna make sure that the firearm is pointed in a safe direction. We're gonna go ahead and open it up, make sure that there aren't any rounds in the chamber with the action remaining open, we're going to go ahead and also open up the cable lock. And we're going to push the loading gate up out of the way, insert the cable through. The bottom area of the action through the ejection port remove the key and it is now secure even if we were to be able to push the loading gate past and get around in there, we're not gonna be able to get the bolt forward to close the action and this pump shotgun is secure using the cable lock. To secure a semi-automatic shotgun with a cable lock, first thing we're gonna do is make sure that the firearms pointed in a generally safe direction.
Use whatever procedure is required by your firearm to lock the action open. We can confirm then once again that the gun is unloaded. We're gonna open the cable lock. And you're usually going to find at the front of the loading gate a space that space is there to help you clear a malfunction should you need to at some other operating point in using the firearm, you should be able to feed the cable lock through there up to the ejection port. You might need to grab it and pull through.
At that point you can secure the cable lock, remove the key, and even if you were to be able to get a round into the chamber at this point when you try to close the action. The cable lock will block the gun from going into battery, and this semi-automatic shotgun is secure using a cable lock. To secure a double barrel shotgun with a cable lock we're gonna need an extended cable or chain to assist us. Now I'm saying double barreled shotgun. This is a side by side shotgun.
This is an over under shotgun, but this technique will work with any breech action shotgun where you break it open, even a single barrel, um, which there are plenty of them out there. What you're gonna do is open it up, obviously point it in a safe direction and make sure that it is empty, and then you're gonna take your auxiliary cable and feed it through. We usually like to start, uh, not at the muzzle. We don't wanna damage that area though if it's kind of a shotgun, it's not that big a deal. And then once I've got the cable through I'm gonna use my cable lock to secure the cable.
Now in this case I have a little quick link here obviously that can be opened. I don't wanna go through that. I wanna go through the. Actual machined closed part of the cable. Now sometimes people look at this and they say, well, gee, what if somebody cuts the cable?
Well, granted this cable might be a little bit easier to cut than this, but no cable lock is gonna be universally perfect. Um, this is the best technique I'm aware of to secure a breech action any double or single barrel shotgun with a cable lock.
