OTIS Technology 9mm Cleaning Kit
Rob PincusThe Otis Technology 9mm Cleaning Kit comes in its own zippered case, so it’s self-contained and easy to attach to a MOLLE bag or put in your range bag or vehicle -- no worries about losing small parts. Rob Pincus feels this kit is the best-equipped one that he’s used. He reviews the parts contained in the Otis Tech 9mm Cleaning Kit and demonstrates how they work. Along the way, he offers plenty of tips for efficiently and effectively cleaning your 9mm guns.
This kit works for 9mm handguns and also for 9mm pistol-caliber carbines, which is why the cable is much longer than needed for a carry gun.

We're gonna take a close look at this 9 millimeter cleaning kit from Otis Technologies. Now Otis Technologies has been helping us out with the Personal Defense Network training tour this year, and this kit has not been used, but I have used another one just like it. Uh, one of the coolest things about it really is that you don't have to worry about this big plastic thing bouncing around all the time. It comes in its own carrying case, which is obviously something you can snap onto a molly bag or just throw it in your range bag, have it in your vehicle, whatever, which I really like. Um, I've used other kits from Otis in the past.
Um, this particular one is, I think, probably the best equipped that I've seen. Now obviously any of these small kits, they're not gonna have a fixed cleaning rod, but this one does come with a fixed section of rod. It also comes with the pull-through, uh, cable style pull-through. And this one, well, you see some of them are made of cloth, some of them people worry about the cable. This one has a good thick protective plastic coating on it.
Um, obviously it's set up so I can put my patch in there on this end, I can put the other tools that I might want to pull through the barrel as well. Uh, it's got a handle, which is nice, and the way the handle works is we just kinda push this through. That way, and that gives us a good ability to get some leverage and pull this patch all the way through the barrel if it were to get tight in there. This says on the front that it's 9 millimeter, obviously, but it also says that it's for rifles or pistols. What's that mean?
Pistol caliber carbines. You might wonder why there's such a long cable if it's meant for, you know, a carry gun or something like we normally would be talking about in 9 millimeter Personal Defense Network. Some people have up to 16-inch carbines that are 9 millimeter as well. Obviously, most of us are probably in a PCC situation gonna be working with some kind of a a braced pistol nowadays, um, but this will accommodate all of that. Now again, this end is slotted and set up for a patch.
Uh, this end is the female end of a threaded tool set, and here are the male ends of the threaded tool set, and what you get here um is pretty obvious, and some of it may not be obvious, I guess, if you're just looking at it with the cable because some of it is designed just to be attached. to this handle and use, so this is a brass scraper here if you want something that's a little bit softer metal, um, but you're gonna be scraping along some of your stuff that's cerakoted or any kind of finish that you have that you're worried about marring up. This metal is gonna be a little bit softer than the small scrapers, and the small scrapers, if we check this, make sure that it is empty, and we're gonna break this down. And pull that top off. I promise you I should know how to do if I want to get into the nooks and crannies, if I want to, like, for example, clean under the rails, that's where we've got these two small picks.
So we've got a larger scraper tool and we've got these smaller picks. So again I would attach that, put that all the way down. And then you can see I've got a really small object here. I can put solvent on this. I can maybe try to run a patch through it.
The other thing I like to do is I can put a patch over that and then then push down with the pick and obviously the pick itself is going to be good for knocking out anything that's a little bit grimier or a little bit more stuck. There's also a hooked pick in the kit. I like that one that's a really helpful tool as well for getting down in and under things if you're not gonna completely strip down the frame, which most people aren't gonna do when they're doing their regular maintenance. That's a really good tool. And then obviously we've got other things in here.
You're not necessarily gonna use everything all the time, uh, but we've got everything from we also got this, uh, flag that we can put in there. The flag is not just a flag to show the gun is locked open. These are also really useful for looking. Down the bore, right, so when we get this spring out of the way. Get the barrel out of the gun.
we can use this to provide some light also. so this is gonna allow us to look down the bore and inspect that bore, not really for obstructions but for damage so it collects the light almost like a fiber optic and then it shoots it back in there so it's not just the chamber flag but it's also really useful for that. Um, we've got a toothbrush, good stiff brush again we can put that onto this handle, Use that to scrub any of the larger parts, um, for smaller nooks and crannies, we've got a good brush there. It's a little bit softer than the firm stiff bristles there. We've got this cotton swab and we've got a brass bore brush as well in here and it does come with some patches to get you started.
Some CLP, um, obviously you're at the range you're doing a quick clean up, you don't have all your supplies. This thing will do, uh, both the cleaning and the solvent work for you. Um, and again, this is meant to be, I'm gonna put this back probably pretty sloppily, but it's meant to be a great kit that you can have with you anywhere, you can keep with you in your gear bag. Again, I, I like to have one of these in the vehicle. Um, I don't have just one range bag, you can imagine.
Um, that I use any place and this is also a great travel kit, so this is something that um I don't think there's anything in here that would be prohibited by TSA, to be honest, and it's definitely less than 3 ounces of liquid. Um, but certainly in terms of, uh, checked baggage, you could throw this into your bag, um, and have it with you whenever you're traveling and, uh, something like this, this is a good cleaning kit that could be really useful for other things. Not just firearms as well, right, especially with some of the smaller tools, some of the smaller picks and scrapers that you've got and the small brush. Uh, but it's obviously designed for cleaning handguns or rifles specifically in 9 millimeter. It would also work with .38 Special revolvers, .357 revolvers.
I promise you that will fit in there if I can get it all wrapped up pretty good. It comes with an instruction manual, uh, in case you've never cleaned a gun before. You're not exactly sure how some of those smaller tools are used. Um, I like to use these little things as parts trays. I leave those in my gun room or other places where I'm gonna be working as small parts trays.
Carry that with you and cool group therapy sticker as well. Otis Technologies 9 millimeter pistol and rifle cleaning kit compact, pretty cool.
