Product Review: S&W Model 640 Revolver
Grant CunninghamDescription
Hi, I'm grant Cunningham, here with the Personal Defense Network. And we're here at the 2015 NRA show at the Smith and Wesson booth. Now Smith and Wesson is one of my favorite manufacturers of revolvers. I've been a Smith and Wesson owner for a long time and we're taking a look this time at their Pro series revolvers. And some of the reasons you might wanna pick one of the Pro series revolvers for self-defense or personal defense.
Now, one of the big features of the Pro series revolver is that it doesn't have the internal walk, the Smith and Wesson made famous a few years ago. Now this internal lock is a really great device if you're trying to keep the guns safe from say children, from unauthorized access, you can walk it up and they can't pull the trigger. They can't do anything with the gun but for a gun for self-defense where you need absolute liability and you need to make sure that the gun is going to fire when you really need it in a self-defense situation, a gun without a self, or without one of the internal walks is a better choice. And that's one of the big things that the Smith and Wesson Pro series features is the lack of the internal walk. I'm a big fan of that as a concealed carry gun.
Now, this particular one is the Smith and Wesson 640 Pro from their Pro series. The 640 is an internal hammer gun, you know, so it doesn't have a hammer, nothing to snag when you draw it out. For instance, if you're carrying it in a pocket you don't have to worry about snagging when its drawn. And it also has really good high visibility sights. One of the issues that we really want into with these small guns are the sights.
They're very difficult to use when you need the precision that only the sights will give you. The high definition sights on the Pro series these particular ones are trijicon night sights give you a much sharper, much more defined sight picture for those situations where you really need the precision that the sights afford you. And of course, because they're trijicon they are night sights, they glow in the dark at night. So in some sort of subdued lighting situations they may come in handy for that as well. So good choice for personal defense, good choice for concealed carry.
I particularly liked the 640, which is an all stainless steel J-frame revolver, five shot revolver in 357 Magnum. Now I always carry 38 special +Ps in mind but these make a really great gun, particularly on a belt. They're very small. They're very compact. They're very easy to conceal.
And one of my favorite guns in the Smith and Wesson line in fact is the 640. The 640 Pro series just makes it all that much better. So if you're considering a small frame revolver for personal defense or concealed carry, the 640 series and particularly the 640 Pro series from Smith and Wesson is a really good choice.
