Cable Lock Demo: Rifles

Rob Pincus
Duration:   5  mins

In this, the third of our combined cable lock how-to videos, Rob Pincus shows how to attach a cable lock to a magazine-fed semiautomatic rifle, a magazine-fed .22 Long Rifle, a lever-action rifle, and a traditional bolt-action rifle.

Even within these categories of firearms, there is no one-way-fits-all method for attaching a cable lock. Rob demonstrates the different ways to attach a cable lock to an AR and an AK, and the differences among bolt-action rifles.

To secure a magazine fed semi-automatic rifle with your cable lock, you can open the cable lock up first. And then lock the action open on your semi-automatic firearm. Now that's gonna be done a lot of different ways with an AR type firearm you brace it against yourself, pull back, push in on the bottom of the bolt catch, and you can release the charging handle that will leave the ejection port open, gives you the opportunity again to confirm that the firearm is empty at that point. Magazine was already removed in this case, and I'm gonna start at the ejection port and feed the cable down through the magazine well. And at that point I can secure the cable, remove the key, and we can see that not only will magazine not go in, but even if we were going to try to hand feed a single round into the chamber at this point we try to put the bolt back forward, it will not go into battery.

Now if you have a semi-automatic firearm that you cannot lock the bolt to the rear, one thing that you can do, I'm gonna go ahead and lock it to the rear to remove. This cable lock for this demonstration. And I'll give you another option. One thing that you can do if you don't know how to lock the bolt open to the rear or you have something like an AK-47 that doesn't allow you to lock it open traditionally, you can make sure that you have an empty magazine, insert the empty magazine into the firearm, and most firearms, when you then work the action, will lock open on that empty magazine. Simply remove the magazine, now you have the open ejection port and the open magazine well, you can insert.

The cable lock down through. Insert, remove the key, and now you have secured that firearm this way. If you don't have the empty magazine at that point, you can use anything when you pull back on that charging handle or to open the action in any way, and you can block that with a pen you can block that with an empty cartridge, you can block that in any way to allow you to feed the cable lock through so that you can secure your firearm. To secure a magazine fed 22 long rifle with a cable lock, you're gonna open up that cable lock, make sure the magazine is released from the gun, and there's a lot of different ways to do that depending on your firearm. Make sure the firearm is pointed in a generally safe direction and lock the slide open.

The action is gonna be open again, different ways with different guns. What that should do is create enough space for you to feed through the ejection port down into the magazine area. You might need to use both hands. We feed that through enough so that you can secure the cable lock. Remove the key and now not only will the magazine not be able to be put into the firearm we also won't be able to hand load any rounds into the chamber and if we were to try to release this, depending on how that works on your firearm, you'll see that it will not go into battery and this rifle is secure with the cable lock.

To secure a lever action firearm in this case a lever action rifle with a cable lock, we do have to be very specific and we're gonna use this tool first before you get started you wanna open the action, make sure with the firearm pointed in a generally safe direction that it is empty, completely unloaded. Then what we're gonna do is we're gonna close the action again. We're gonna use this tool to make sure that the loading gate is open. You may not be able to open it because of the way the internals move when you open the lever, but if you pin it down in the open position with this tool, you can then open the lever opening the action, and that allows you to take the open end of your cable lock and essentially while holding the loading gate down, use it as a bit of a ramp to push the cable lock through the action of the gun. Then you can secure it.

Remove the key and it will not be possible to close the action, which means that even if you were to force a round into the chamber, you won't be able to fire it with this gun. It is now safe with the cable lock installed. To secure a traditional bolt action rifle with a cable lock usually gonna have two options. Option number one, of course, is gonna be to keep the fire and pointing in a safe direction, make sure that it's unloaded, and then find out how you open the floor plate of the box magazine. Now if you have a detachable magazine, then you're just gonna hit the magazine release and remove the magazine.

Most traditional older hunting rifles will have a floor plate that pops open that will create the opening that you need to be able to. Open your cable lock, insert it through the magazine up through. The ejection port, remove the key, and it will now be secure because you will not be able to close the bolt. The other option that you might have is To leave this in place. And find out how to release the bolt of your firearm.

Now with this particular firearm, there's a button between the trigger and between the magazine four plate release that you push up on after opening the bolt. There are other designs that have other levers or buttons. You're gonna figure that out using your manual or contact manufacturer. If I push up on that button, I can then remove the bolt. If I remove the bolt entirely, then again that creates the opening that I'll use to go in through the ejection port.

The cable lock will come out the rear of the receiver, and I'll be able to remove the key and then obviously this is now secure because I'm not gonna be able to replace the bolt in the gun and you just have to keep track of this and store it. So either way you can use the cable lock to secure your bolt action rifle.
