FN 15 Tactical II Rifle

Just about every company makes an AR-15 these days, but we have higher expectations of an AR from FN, whose tagline is “the world’s most battle-proven firearms.” FN has a sterling track record with our military and armed forces all over the world. But is this the firearm you need for home defense and rifle training, or as a patrol rifle if you’re in law enforcement? Rob Pincus believes the FN 15 is a strong contender for these roles.

TECHNICAL SPECS

The FN 15 is a well-built firearm. It features a three-pronged flash hider and a high-quality barrel. FN makes barrels for many different AR makers and for firearms all over the world.

ARs are fairly standardized, so one area Rob always looks at closely is the handguard. The FN 15 handguard, which utilizes M-LOK technology, is well contoured, thin, and has a full-length rail on top. Like any handguard, you can accessorize it however you want, but what you start with is small, nice-feeling, and ergonomic.

Moving to the back, the FN 15 includes Magpul MOE gear with the grip and adjustable buttstock, which has rubber buttpads and a well-contoured comb.

LIVE FIRE

Rob checks the trigger of the FN 15 by doing some live fire, with an Aimpoint Micro red dot installed on the rifle. And no surprise, the FN 15 handles well and is accurate, and this is Rob’s first time firing it.

Most ARs are very similar, so what you’re looking for is the intersection of cost, value, and reliability that’s right for you. Not all ARs are created equal as far as reliability goes, and this is where the FN 15 has a big advantage over other self-defense gear. With the FN name behind it, we can be confident the FN 15 is going to be reliable.

What would be a good choice for a better charging handle?

So let's talk about the FN 15. Now, just about everybody makes an AR 15 these days, right? But this one is made by FN. FN, they talk about being the most battle proven firearm in the market. And the fact is that's probably true as far as the guns that are coming out in the U.S.

right now. FN absolutely has quite a track history of great service to our military, to our armed forces, and to militaries all over the world. The FN guns obviously are very battle proven. But is this the gun you need for your home defense rifle, for your patrol rifle, maybe if you're in law enforcement? I think it's definitely one that you should consider.

It's going to be a well-built gun. Let's start out here with the flash hider. It's a tripod type, three pronged flash hider, kind of a more of a retro look with some modern styling, I kind of like it. We'll see how it works here when we start shooting. The barrel, obviously FN makes great barrels.

They make barrels for a lot of different AR makers out there. They make barrels for obviously a lot of different firearms around the world, and we know that they're going to be high quality. One of the unique things about any of the guns that ship from any of the manufacturers, because the AR is obviously very standardized, one of the things that I look at is the hand guard. What is the, manufacturer shipping from the factory with the gun? And the FN 15 hand guard is one of the ones that I really like.

It's well contoured, it's thin, obviously it's got a full length rail on the top but you don't have to worry about any of the rail parts that you don't want around the outside. Now like any other AR you can accessorize this however you want. But what you start with is a really nice feeling, small, ergonomic hand guard, and I like that. Obviously it's going to be full length and we got the rail up on top, as I said. When you come back here to the gun you're actually going to see all the things you expect.

You've got some Moe gear here from Magpul, that's always a good choice. The adjustable stock, obviously we're gonna be able to push that in and out, however you want. It's got the rubber butt pads, so it's not got that plastic feel up against you. And it's got a really nice comb, It's got a good contour up here. That's going to be nice for getting the gun up on your face Standard charging handle, that's one of the things I'd probably change as soon as I got this gun into my inventory.

And I've thrown an aim point on here, the micro. I obviously like these microdots a lot. You've probably seen this on a whole bunch of different rifles in different videos I've done, 'cause it's the one that I throw on. It's my go-to to test the gun out to see how it feels. Standard safety, standard bolt release.

And we're going to check the trigger right now. I'm going to put my eye protection on, I've got my ear protection in already. And this is absolutely the first time that I am shooting this FN 15, haven't checked the dot. I'm sure that at our normal home defense or patrol rifle distance going into this target that's up here, very close, we should be in the chest Absolutely, we're there where we should be. It's a little bit lower than the dot because we're going to normally set this gun up so that it zeroed out maybe at a hundred yards, that way when I put this dot up at the top of the triangle on the head I'm going to end up dropping that shot down in there.

Now we can see, this is a little bit off to the right. So I come back up, and we get into that triangle very quickly. Now, if we go to the back target, we can see that we can get those shots into that head very quickly and easily. The thing with an AR obviously is that they're all going to be very, very similar. What you're really looking for is a cost-value-reliability issue.

Now, not all ERs are created equal in terms of reliability. We trust the FN name and I expect this to be an incredibly reliable gun, a great gun for you to choose for home defense or for a patrol rifle use. Obviously, if you're going to be doing any kind of three gun competition, things like that, FN has really been making a name for themselves in the competition circles. And this is going to be a great base to build your competition rifle off of as well. Long term, we're looking for reliability and durability in an AR.

I trust FN to give us that. I think this gun is going to be a great option for you to decide on as your choice for home defense or again, for use as an armed professional. FN's a trusted name, the FN 15. It's probably going to be a great rifle for you to trust in a worst case scenario for home or personal defense.
