Magnum Research MR-9 Eagle
Rob PincusDescription
Well, I'm here at Magnum Research, the home of the iconic Desert Eagle pistol. And if you don't know what the Desert Eagle 0.50 is, then hit the internet and figure it out. It's not the most viable defensive gun, but the Baby Desert Eagle has been a viable option for a lot of people for a long time. And of course, the precursor to this gun, and I actually own, it's the Jericho, the improvements on the Baby Desert Eagle included a decocker, which of course we want in any kind of a double action, single action gun, but Jim's here to talk with us about the newest defensive pistol from Magnum Research, the MR9, and of course, the MR40, and unlike the old compact Baby Desert Eagle that was a 12 shot, this is a 15 plus 1. And obviously, I mean that's a strong resemblance to the Walther P99, but there's some things going on here that are unique.
Tell us about this gun, Jim. Will do, thank you Rob. The MR9 and MR40, as we manufacture them, hits all of our criteria. We like the handgun that not only shoots well but shoots to point of aim. For us that's really critical.
What you don't see while I'm holding this gun is when this gun comes to you in a package, it has an adjustable rear sight and it has a front sight installed on the slide and it comes in the box with five additional front sight heights. So especially on a nine millimeter, from 115 to 147 grain, and your shooting style, you will always be able to get this gun to zero, 100% of the time. You'll be able to get it to zero. Sure, and some people prefer to do the six o'clock hold. Some people prefer target hold.
Bingo, yep. You can adjust that to your style. Of course, we recommend a target style hold with this type of gun. So you can get that in there. Now I was, I was one of the first owners of the P99 and of course I've shot the SW99.
I'm excited about trying the MR9 which is obviously the latest evolution of this design. The decocker's up on top of the slide, just like it has been in the other versions of this style of lower combined this upper. But this is also a different look on the stainless steel. Yeah, we purchase the frames from Walther, that's not a big secret. It's a proven design and it's a good company.
We like them as business partners. However, we've taken their lower and combined it with our upper, which is manufactured in Minnesota. And we've also changed the material, we use a 416 type stainless on our slide. And if you can see it from the front end it has the distinctive shape of the Desert Eagle, which is our flagship. Sure, absolutely.
So we tried to make this gun look like the Desert Eagle and I think we've succeeded. It's a really a neat looking gun. Neat laser engraving here. They shoot very, very well, they're very dependable. We call this a fast action.
And the reason we do that it's in a cocked position right now, you can see the red striker showing. I decock it, I only have to move that slide about 3/8 of an inch and I can recock it or I can start firing double action, my choice. Now I know you wanna talk about this grip a little bit, too. Yeah, thanks, Rob. A unique feature on this gun is we sell it with three different back panels for the grip frame, the medium is on the gun when it's sold to you in a box.
I've taken the pin out just so I can show you how this works. They come out very easily. We provide this gun with a small one, medium on the gun and a large one. And the way that works is they simply dovetail in the top. Slipped on in the little notch, put the pin back in.
This is the largest one for a guy with big paws. And actually, that's very common on a lot of guns today but Walther was one of the first ones to do that, to actually have that interchangeable back strap system. And this is a proven system. I've certainly used it on a couple of the other versions of gun and certainly works here just exactly the same way. This is the gun that I'm really looking forward to spending some time with on the range, checking it out, Jim, I appreciate you telling us about it.
Thank you. Thank you. Thanks for coming.
