Here's another important video from the Personal Defense Network. Reality-based training is a phrase that's used far too often in the training industry. Too many things that seem like on the surface they might be realistic, probably don't fit the context of many people interested in self-defense. Your training can only be reality-based if it's based on the context that you live in and the plausible context of not only the attack, but also your response. Training with a firearm that you carry concealed open isn't as realistic as one might want. Carrying it concealed but with a lightweight jacket or with something other than you normally would wear, still isn't realistic enough. Carrying it concealed in the actual holster that you carry it in, with the actual type of clothing that you usually wear, in the body configuration, in the body positions that you might be attacked in, for instance, sitting in a car, sitting at a desk or standing and walking through a natural environment with uneven terrain, that's more realistic, that's what we want. High level reality-based training takes into account the context of your environment and the plausible reactions that will work for you. Raising your awareness to what those threats could be and what your probable ability to respond will be, how fast you can respond, how easy it is to do that thing that you visualized and then found out on the square range wasn't quite as easy as you had hoped for. Or practicing so that it does become easier and you can do those things more efficiently that you visualize being the most appropriate under some set of circumstances. That's part of the Warrior Expert Theory. Understanding how to raise your awareness so that you can recognize something when you need to and respond more intuitively, will make you more efficient and better able to defend yourself or those you care about.
